Book 1 in Seawolf series
In a bid to regain its superpower status, Russia enters a scheme with Iran and North Korea to control the world's oil reserves, weaken the West, and bring the world to the precipice of nuclear destruction. Standing in their way is the USS Seawolf, her Captain, and his newest crewmember, Lieutenant Kristen Whitaker.
As a naval Academy graduate, brilliant engineer and gifted athlete, Kristen is the quintessential right person in the right place at the right time to prevent catastrophe. But as the first woman ever to serve on an American submarine, she faces unyielding convention and deep-seated prejudice from her fellow officers and crew. With time running out, she must come to terms with a haunted past and carve out her place among the crew before they lose their chance to avert World War III.

I wasn't sure about the premise of the book - the first female submariner on an attack submarine - but decided to take a chance. I'm glad I did. So, OK, she has an IQ of 170+, an eidetic memory, was an Olympic-class swimmer, is fluent in Mandarin, is certified in SCUBA, conveniently has worked on every critical piece of equipment that breaks down, etc., and she immediately does something that will earn her a Navy & Marine Corps Medal, then does something else that will get her a second one, then does something that will get her a Silver Star, if not the Navy Cross. In short, she's sort of Superwoman! Still, it worked. Lots of suspense. Not to be trite, but even gripping. My only nit is the sexual tension beyond that to be expected on the sub. I won't do a spoiler, and I wasn't surprised, but it would have worked better had it been toned down. I'm not saying it was heavy-handed, just that the book would have been improved with a bit mire subtlety in that regard. My only other comment is that the NSC has to have people who are trained to ask themselves, "Is this a red herring? Is someone trying to distract me?" Still, I've ordered the sequel and look forward to it.Product details

Seawolf Mask of Command edition by Cliff Happy Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Let me get the positive stuff out of the way. Mr. Happy (if that's your real name) can write, and write well. He creates good, almost great characters that rival any of today's best authors. That's why I had to give it 2 stars and not -1. Now, let's talk about the rest of the book with SPOILERS TO FOLLOW.
I love techno-thrillers, with the emphasis on the 'techno' part. I want to learn something about a weapons system after reading a book. I want a well researched book like Clancy or Bond are known for. If you're looking for the 'techno' part in this book, you will be disappointed. Just when the situation arises for a good description of a system or a good battle, you will be disappointed when the problem gets solved or the enemy is destroyed without any explanation or action in between.
Then there is the love story. If you consider yourself part of the male gender and you gave this book 4 or 5 stars, you can turn in your ManCard at the local Strip Club (that's a place men go to see naked women without getting arrested). In a military thriller I want stuff blowing up, not a long-winded description about how the main character wants to run her fingers through the captain's flowing hair. Manhood is dying in this country and this book is a reason why.
And the main character, Lt. Kristen Whitaker, or as I like to call her, The Whit, America's new superhero. She will be in the next Avengers movie. She's never stepped foot in a submarine until now. She's spend her whole Navy career "sitting the pine", but don't worry US Navy, she can fix any mechanical issue on the a submarine, play the role of Aquaman's double and survive freezing water, has super hearing which makes her able to hear incoming submarines from miles away, fight fires AND lead elite special ops guys on dangerous missions behind enemy lines. All in one cruise. How you ask? Because she has a photographic memory! Seriously?!?!
My recommendations to anyone that gave this book 4 or 5 stars, especially the guys . . . your next book purchase should be 50 Shades of Grey. I'm sure you will enjoy that too.
I LOVE all of Cliff Happy's books. Have read all 7, rating them *5. This is a Navy story about the '1st woman who' served on a submarine. Sounds accurate in some ways, unrealistic but still very entertaining in other ways. Since I was often the '1st woman/only woman who' back in my Army & USAR days, I found that some of the difficult choices the 2 leads made really resonated w/my own experiences during the Vietnam era. Since I worked full time with USAR, I'm well aware the "loneliness of command". Altho' it's FAST action, fast moving story, with plenty of good & bad guys, it's also a Navy romance & the two leads have some difficult choices to make.
Part of Happy's appeal is that he avoids tons of Navy alpha-soup, ergo his story is easier to follow by those of us without Navy experience. If you like a FAST story line, lots of action, good guys/gal and a bad guy or two, set on a Navy sub (+ Navy romance) this book's for you. Also includes some of the Navy wives. The real "villains" are well written too. Just finished the second vol. It's even better than the 1st. (Former SgtMaj, USAR)
Interesting. This book (and the following) were written by someone really well versed in submarine warfare. However character development left something off the table...subtlety. If Mr. Happy had dialed down the character development a bit and let the characters develop themselves through their actions and the plot, this would have gone from a merely good read to a terrific read. There wasn't a lot of action in the first third of the book, most of the writing was given to putting the main female character in her place without doing much development with the male lead character. The female character was the protagonist, but we knew every move and every thing she was thinking all the time and all (and I mean all) her motivations were known to the reader by page 50, but it went on. Once the plot moved past this excess of character and into some action, there was a pretty good sea story in here. The action was taut, even if some of the scrapes our heroine got into were a bit implausible. By the end of the book, she had become a Navy SEAL, had mastered several other (previously male) functions and had shown herself to be a superhero, but not really. And we still didn't know anything about the hero. He was germane to the plot and the book, but was essentially opaque as a a character. Plot will develop character as much as just writing about the character. But there needs to be a balance. Balance wasn't present here. But when Mr. Happy got to the action and real plot of the book, it was terrific.
